The Hero's Journey

In narratology and comparative mythology, the monomyth, or the hero's journey, is the common template of a broad category of tales that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed.
“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man”.
How does this monomythic sense of adventure and change fit in with Youth Service Delivery and Mentoring?
How does it not!?
If we take a closer look at the major individual steps of the Heroes Journey, and then apply it to the youth developmental journey of a young person, their seeking out of their identity and place in the world etc. we are able to create purpose based programs that assist them in these steps and form a sense of adventure that entices them to seek it further in their lives.
Through a range of programs developed to assist them on this journey, a heavy emphasis on narrative and journaling work to help them create their own narratives, and the availability of mentors to stand beside them on the way, we are able to offer them something entirely unique and exciting that they may never get to experience elsewhere.
